Structural Engineers Group, Inc. (SEG) is a Jacksonville, Florida firm formed in 1993 by the merger of two well established Structural Engineering Consulting firms, each having practices extending back to 1949. Smith, Hardaker, Huddleston & Collins, Inc. and Givens, Kraus & Associates, Inc. both brought substantial depth of experience in the Structural Engineering of a wide variety of building types to the new firm. Located in 25 states and 4 foreign countries, project types designed by SEG include Commercial, Educational, Historical Preservation and Restoration, Industrial, Institutional, Military, Multi-Unit Residential, Parking Structures, Recreational, and Storage.
We've designed many multi-story buildings up to 37 stories in height, and the largest project designed by the firm had a total construction cost exceeding $120 million. SEG has also been granted prequalification to provide design of minor bridge projects (category 4.1) for the Florida Department of Transportation.
The total staff in our Jacksonville, Florida office normally consists of 12 to 16 people including technical and administrative personnel and summer college interns. The office utilizes networked computers for engineering analysis and drawing production as well as for administrative and project management functions. A state-of-the-art library of Engineering software is maintained including STAAD, PCA, ENERCALC, ACI, AISC, RAMSTEEL, RAMADVANSE, STRUCALC, WOODWORKS, as well as other programs. The firm utilizes Architectural Desktop 3.3 graphics software on graphic work stations.
It is the policy of the firm to carefully evaluate the many factors that impact the selection of the structural system and materials to be used for a project. Only after careful study is a conclusion reached as to the appropriate structural system to be used. Significant attention is paid to the issues of project planning, estimating construction costs, and concurrent value engineering as a part of the design process, quality assurance, and timeliness of project document completion.

• Military Facilities.
• Multi-story buildings
• Projects located in 25 states and 4 foreign countries.
Our office utilizes networked in-house computers for administration, project management, engineering analysis and design, in addition to drawing production. A comprehensive library of up-to-date Engineering and AutoCAD software is maintained. REVIT Structure is used for Building Information Modeling (BIM).
SEG evaluates the factors impacting the selection of the structural materials and systems to be used for each project. These include, but are not limited to:
• Project budget
• Bay spacings
• Architectural concept and finishes
• Foundation conditions
• Special local code requirements
• Availability and costs of materials, and
• Construction site and schedule restrictions.
We pay significant attention to the issues of project planning, probable construction cost, design process, timeliness of project document completion, and quality assurance. SEG has an active quality management program focused on the continual improvement of administrative, management, and technical processes.
With over 58 years of experience on all types of projects, structural systems and foundation types, SEG has the ability to formulate unique solutions to difficult problems. Issues of economical construction and constructability are of prime concern, as is the maintaining of open lines of communication with all team members.
